Hi Robb and TJH. Thanks very for your suggestions. I guess I'll assess things when I get there about what seems best to do, and it's nice to be able to check out a few of the options in advance. (I already have a friend who's keen to get me to DC for a couple of days.)

A number of years ago I lived in an area not too far from New York City, which I am assuming is the area you are heading to for your trip. Both of these locations below have lots of trails which would make good day trips from NYC.

http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=130

I have tramping in all of these in the winter, but it is completely dependent on what the weather is likely currently there. There are lots of other areas but these are likely the best if you are looking to stay relatively close to NYC.

This might help you if you are looking for other options:

Kia ora Mike,
There is probably enough to see and do in the city itself depending on your tastes in art, music, food, museums, ect, but you are also not too far away from the Applachian Trail, and I know there are shuttles and such to it. Though the frequency of operation I am not sure of in winter. www.appalachiantrail.org
will give you better info. Also if you are into history, within a relatively short distance to New York are some of the Civil War battlefields which are pretty amazing places as well. There are a lot of state parks around the New York and New Jersey area, though I have always found them pretty disappointing places in terms of "nature". Hope you have a great trip!
Cheers,
