This was a WTMC easy-rated trip to Rangiwahia Hut in the Ruahine ranges, from Sep 22nd to 24th 2006.
It was a nice, shallow grade walking to the hut, with the exception of a big landslip (from 1999, I think), which required a lot of steep clambering up, over and down the hill to get around. We were at the hut within three hours (and would have been much sooner if we hadn’t been so leisurely), after which a smaller group of us went for a wander around the tops, which still had some scattered snow. We spent Saturday afternoon on a daywalk around Mangahuia, including lots of sliding around the snow on pack liners.
The sweatiest part of the trip was carrying my pack home from Wellington Railway Station, and generally it was heaps of fun.

We finally managed to get around this scenic loop in the Ruahines, which is almost entirely made up of tops travel. It was a weekend of very nice weather, even though a light easterly in the Ruahines meant walking through some clag. For me personally, it was the first time I've connected the dots between [...]

12 people in a 6 bunk hut.
The weather report for the weekend indicated what looked to be quite a violent deluge of a front smothering the entire country all at once, from north to south. The met service was issuing weather warning's galore. Forecast chart visualisations available through Jim McGregor's metvuw.com website might have implied [...]
Trip: Rangiwahia to Heritage via Triangle and Iron Gates (4 common tags)
Honestly, who would have thought it'd be rainy fogged-in weather on Labour Weekend? Apparently not us, because we had a fairly intensive tramp planned that would have gone from Rangiwahia over to Howletts, then back via Iron Gates. Unfortunately it rained and it snowed and it didn't really work so well, but it was still [...]
